On Saturday, June 6th, JOEE volunteers took a group of children from a Tokyo-based orphanage to Disneyland. This excursion was a gift enabled by a generous JOEE volunteer who used her end-of-year bonus to buy the entrance tickets and all the expenses in the park for this excited group of kids. The children earned this trip by successfully completing at least five JOEE English lessons. Many of them had already been attending lessons in the orphanage for several years, but some had newly joined after hearing about the Disneyland challenge.
6月6日（土）、JOEEのボランティアたちは、東京にある児童養護施設の子どもたちを連れてディズニーランドへ出かけました。この遠足は、あるJOEEボランティアの寛大なご厚意によって実現したものです。その方は、年末賞与を使って、ワクワクする子どもたちのための入場券やパーク内での諸費用をすべて負担してくださいました。子どもたちは、JOEEの英語レッスンを5回以上無事に修了したことで、この旅行の参加資格を得ました。彼らの多くは、すでに数年間、施設内でレッスンを受けていましたが、中には「ディズニーランドへの挑戦」という話を聞いて新しく参加した子たちもいました。
This trip is the first that JOEE has organized and, if we are able to find more donors, we may offer this opportunity to more groups of children at orphanages in Tokyo. Kids growing up in institutions rarely get the chance to go on vacation trips, so this was a unique experience for them. They had a wonderful time enjoying the rides and shows, and were happy to have the extra attention of enthusiastic volunteers who donated an entire day, just to create brilliant memories for these kids.
今回の旅行はJOEEが主催した初めての企画であり、今後さらに多くの寄付者を募ることができれば、東京の他の児童養護施設の子どもたちにもこの機会を提供できるかもしれません。施設で育つ子どもたちが休暇旅行に行く機会はめったにないため、彼らにとってこれはかけがえのない体験となりました。子どもたちはアトラクションやショーを満喫して素晴らしい時間を過ごし、子どもたちのために素晴らしい思い出を作ろうと丸一日を捧げてくれた熱心なボランティアたちから特別な関心を向けられ、大喜びでした。
One of our JOEE volunteers, Waleed, is a doctor who is living in Tokyo and has a heart of compassion for these children. He writes about his experience here:
“Since I moved to Japan, I have been to Disneyland on many occasions to celebrate friends and family birthdays or just to have fun on a holiday. The days I went to Disneyland with these kids (from the orphanage) had a different kind of joy that i have not felt before. I was riding the attractions and eating the delicious snacks, but my mind was not feeling the joy of these fun things because it was overwhelmed by seeing the joy and the amazing time the kids were having… especially since it was their first time visiting. This is truly what every child in the world deserves to have; not only once-in-a-long-time, but on a regular basis. I cannot express how lucky and happy I was to be a part of this and I am determined to sponsor another trip for these kids someday in the near future. I am very grateful for everyone who was a part of this. I’m thankful to all the staff, teachers, and to JOEE for making all these wonderful things happen.”
JOEEのボランティアの一人であるワリードさんは、東京在住の医師で、こうした子供たちに対して深い思いやりを持っています。彼は自身の体験について次のように綴っています。
「日本に移り住んで以来、友人や家族の誕生日を祝ったり、単に休日を楽しんだりするために、何度もディズニーランドを訪れてきました。（児童養護施設の）子どもたちと一緒にディズニーランドへ行った日は、これまで感じたことのない、特別な喜びに満ちていました。アトラクションに乗ったり、美味しいおやつを食べたりしていましたが、子どもたちが楽しんでいる姿や、素晴らしい時間を過ごしている様子に心を奪われ、自分自身がその楽しさを実感する余裕はありませんでした……特に、子供たちにとって初めての訪問だったからです。これこそが、世界中のすべての子どもたちが享受すべきものなのです。それは「ごくまれにある」体験ではなく、日常的に味わえるものであるべきです。この活動の一員になれたことがどれほど幸運で幸せだったか、言葉では言い表せません。近い将来、またこの子どもたちのために旅行を後援することを決意しています。この活動に関わってくださったすべての方々に心から感謝しています。これら素晴らしい体験を実現してくださったスタッフの皆さん、先生方、そしてJOEEに感謝します。」
Not only did the children get to experience the magic of Disneyland, their time while standing in line was also enriched by the English-language games the volunteers and staff played with them. From playing “I-Spy” to singing Disney movie songs in English, the kids were challenged to put their language skills to use. Here is an example of a game that can be played while standing in line at Disneyland:
Leader: “I see something!” Kids: “What do you see?” Leader: “I see…. kids playing guitars!” At this verbal cue, all of the kids, (once they understand the meaning), begin playing air guitars while repeating the English phrase, “Playing guitars!”
子どもたちはディズニーランドの魔法を体験できただけでなく、列に並んでいる間も、ボランティアやスタッフが一緒に遊んでくれた英語のゲームのおかげで、その時間がより充実したものになりました。「アイ・スパイ」のゲームから、ディズニー映画の曲を英語で歌うことまで、子どもたちは自分の語学力を活用するよう促されました。ここでは、ディズニーランドの列に並んでいる間に遊べるゲームの一例をご紹介します：
リーダー：「I see something!」 子どもたち：「What do you see?」 リーダー：「I see…. kids playing guitars!」 この合図で、子どもたちは（意味を理解すると）、全員でエアギターを弾きながら、「Playing guitars!」という英語のフレーズを繰り返します。
The JOEE volunteers brought along motivational props: hats, snacks, song sheets, puppets. These were used to help capture the attention of the participants and heighten the engagement during the English lessons conducted while standing in line. Waleed brought along his baby kangaroo puppet which he won at a JOEE fundraiser. The kids loved his cute little JOEE joey puppet which he creatively named “KangaRuth” as a nod to the name of JOEE’s founding director, Ruth Ingulsrud.
JOEEのボランティアたちは、帽子、おやつ、歌詞カード、人形といった盛り上げ用の小道具を持参しました。これらは、列に並んでいる間に実施される英語レッスンで、参加者の注意を引きつけ、参加意欲を高めるために活用されました。ワリードさんは、JOEEの募金活動で当った赤ちゃんカンガルーの指人形を持参しました。子どもたちは、JOEEの創設ディレクターであるルース・イングルスルードの名前にちなんで、彼が独創的に「カンガルース」と名付けた、この可愛らしいJOEEのカンガルーの赤ちゃんの人形を大いに気に入りました。
